Falling
As he fell into the darkness, he reached out to the ones who threw him over the edge of the shining city, but they had turned away from him the moment they released him into the cold dark of the abyss, which welcomed him like an old friend, or perhaps a beloved pet thought lost. He struggled to ascend, to once again see the brilliance of the streets paved with gold, where no one knew pain, or loss. It was in vain, as the distance between him and the city grew. Eventually, his strength ebbed, his vision blinded by the tears that filled his eyes. The pain of separation from his former life was equally matched by the feeling of loss. To never know the love he had taken for granted ever again. All it took was one decision, one moment of rebellion, and he had lost everything. The city dwindled in his sight until it was a pinprick of light, the only evidence that it ever existed. A twinkle in the darkness of the abyss. A reminder of what he had lost. "Please," he whispered, his voice stolen by the surrounding dark. "Forgive me. Take me back." There was not even an echo to answer him as he continued to fall. |
